Head First: A Psychiatrist's Stories of Mind and Body (Atlantic Books, 2021)

What does it mean to be well? Is it something in our body? Or, is it rather something subjective - something of the mind? In this collection of clinical stories, I draw on my experience of treating thousands of hospital patients to show how our emotions are inextricably linked to our physical wellbeing.

No More Normal: Mental Health in an Age of Over-Diagnosis (Granta Books, 2025)

How do we define what normality is? At what point does a low mood tip over into depression? When does a distressing experience qualify as trauma? When does a cluster of symptoms indicate an underlying condition? As the conversation around mental health has moved from the consulting room to the public arena, so the concept of normal is shifting. Today, we are seeing  significant rise in diagnosable conditions, in waiting lists, in diagnoses, and in medication.

The question I ask in this book is whether we are really less psychologically healthy than previous generations, how to understand and explain the increased diagnoses, and suggest solutions for the future direction of psychiatry.
